Amitriptyline, clomipramine, dothiepin, doxepin, maprotiline and mianserin.

Anti-depressants with Minimal Sedative Properties

Imipramine

Esipramine

Paroxetine

Sertraline

Fluvaxomine

Sertraline and Fluoxetine

Tricyclics and related anti-depressants should be used for at least 2 weeks before the suppression of symptoms can be anticipated.

After these, the dose should not be altered for at least one month.

Remission usually occurs after 3 months to one year and above.

Anti-depressants should not be discontinued abruptly.

General Side Effects of Tricyclic Anti-depressants

Antimuscarinic actions namely: drowsiness, urinary retention, dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, sweating, hypotensive effect (which may lead to dizziness and syncope).

Arrhythmias and heart block, convulsion, haematological and hepatic disorders.
